Accessibility

Last updated October 29, 2026

We want everyone to be able to adopt, rehome and shop on PickAPet. That includes people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, zoom, voice control or a switch.

What we aim for

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. These are the guidelines most sites and courts in the United States go by. We are working toward them on every page. We do not claim every page meets them yet.

How we build for it

  • Pages use clear headings and lists, so a screen reader can move through them in order.
  • Photos and buttons without words have text that describes them.
  • Everything works with a keyboard, and you can see where you are on the page.
  • Text and buttons have enough contrast to read.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, the page stops its fades and slides.
  • Forms tell you in words which answers are missing, not only in red, and take you to each one.

How we check

We check pages with a keyboard and with a screen reader, on a phone and on a computer, and we fix what we find. A problem that stops someone from using the site is fixed as quickly as any other broken part of it.

We do not use an accessibility widget or overlay. We fix the site itself, because a widget cannot fix a page that was built wrong.

Tips for using the site

  • Make text bigger with your browser's zoom. On a computer, press Ctrl and + (Command and + on a Mac).
  • Turn on Reduce Motion in your phone or computer settings to stop the page's fades and slides.
  • Long forms, like an adoption application, keep your answers as you go for 30 days. You can take a break and come back.
  • The site works best in a recent version of Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Where we fall short

  • Pet photos come from owners and shelters. Some may not have a full description yet.
  • Documents people upload, like vet records, may not work with a screen reader.
  • Paying by card and signing in with Google happen on pages run by other companies. They have their own accessibility support.

If part of the site stops working for assistive technology for a while, we will say so on this page.

Tell us about a problem

Email hello@pickapet.org with the page you were on and what went wrong. It helps to say which device, browser and assistive technology you use.

We reply within 2 business days. If a page stops you from doing something, like applying for a pet or placing an order, we will help you finish it another way.
