We ask for personal details because placing a cat well depends on them. We use them for that and nothing else. We do not sell them, rent them, or use them for advertising.
What we collect
When you apply to adopt: your name, email, phone, city and ZIP; your answers about your home (own or rent, years at the address, plans to move, children under 6), where the cat will live, declawing, hours the cat would be alone, your pets past and present, how you would pay for an emergency vet bill and your monthly budget for the cat; the name and phone number of your vet; and, only if you rent, whether your lease allows cats and your landlord's name and phone number.
Some answers end an application automatically: plans to declaw, an outdoor-only home, or renting without your landlord's permission, for example. You see the reason straight away, and you can email us if you think we got it wrong.
When you sign an adoption contract: your full address, your typed signature, and the date, time, IP address, and browser it was signed from. Texas law requires the address on the sterilization agreement, and the rest is the record that you signed.
When you ask us to rehome your cat: your name, email, phone, city and ZIP, what you tell us about your cat and why you need to rehome them, any of their belongings you list for sale with your prices, your typed signature on the owner agreement with the same signing record, and the vaccination and spay or neuter records you send. Those records often show your home address, so they are stored privately and never appear on the public listing.
When you apply to foster: your name, email, phone, city and ZIP, and what you tell us about your home, your own pets, and your experience.
When you pay: for now we record only the amount and the date. When card payments open, Stripe will handle them: we will see that a payment was made and its amount, never your card number.
Who sees it
The rescue's founder and the developer who runs this website for us. Nobody else at the rescue has access.
If you are adopting a cat that is listed for its current owner (a courtesy listing), we may share your first name and phone number with that owner once your application is approved, so the handover can be arranged.
If you list your cat's belongings for sale, the cat's public page shows each item, its condition and your price, but never your name or contact details.
We do not contact your vet or landlord until we are reviewing your application, and then only to confirm what you told us.
If an adopted cat's sterilization is not confirmed in time, Texas law (Health & Safety Code ch. 828) requires us to file a complaint with the local authorities, and that complaint names the adopter.
Services that store it for us
The site runs on Vercel. Applications, contracts, and records are stored in a Supabase database and private file storage. Card payments will go through Stripe once they open, and email notifications are sent through an email delivery service. Each of them processes your information only to provide that service to us.
Cookies
None for visitors. The only cookie this site sets is the sign-in cookie for the rescue's two administrators. There is no analytics or advertising tracking.
How long we keep it
As long as we need it to place the cat and keep our records. Signed adoption contracts and sterilization agreements are kept for as long as the law may require us to produce them.
We also keep encrypted weekly backups of our records so nothing is lost to a technical failure. Each backup is deleted after 12 weeks, so anything we delete is gone from the backups by then too.
Seeing, correcting, or deleting yours
Email hello@mrandmrskittykat.org and we will send you what we hold, fix what is wrong, or delete it. The one thing we cannot delete early is a signed contract, for the reason above.
