Short answers to what people ask most.
Adopting
How do I adopt?
Find a pet and apply. It takes about ten minutes and it's free. We reply within two days, either way. If the owner chooses you, you meet at the owner's home, at a vet's office, or anywhere else your state and city allow. Then you sign the adoption contract online.
How do I stay safe at the meet?
We recommend meeting at the owner's home, at a vet's office, or anywhere else your state and city allow. Keep personal details like phone numbers and emails out of the chat. Our Terms of use explain why. If you ever feel unsafe, walk away. Your safety matters more than any adoption.
Do I need an account?
Yes. It's free, and you make it when you apply.
Why do you check my ID?
To confirm you are 18 or older and that the name on your ID matches your account. The other person never sees your ID. We delete the photo as soon as your application or listing is decided or withdrawn, or after 30 days, whichever comes first.
Fees
What is the adoption service fee?
It's PickAPet's fee for screening, checking vet records and arranging the handoff. It's not a price for the pet and not a donation. For most pets it is $75. When we confirm a pet's breed, it is $150, which includes the breed check. A bonded pair goes home together, and you pay each pet's own fee.
What is the breed check?
When a pet is listed with its breed, we check the breed before the listing goes live. We look at breed papers or a registration, or without them, at vet records, photos and the breed standard. The breed check is not a DNA test, not a vet's confirmation and not a registration. It is not a guarantee of breed, ancestry, size, health or behavior. Mixed ancestry can be hard to tell from looks. If we confirm the breed, the listing shows it, and the fee is $150, which includes the breed check. If we can't, the listing shows the pet as a mix of that breed, and the fee is $75.
When do I pay?
Only at the meet, when you enter the PIN. You add a card when the meet is confirmed. We hold the fee 2 hours before the meet.
What if I cancel?
Once the meet is confirmed, cancelling, not showing up or saying no at the meet costs 10% of the fee.
You pay nothing if the owner cancels, doesn't show or says no. You also pay nothing if you both agree to move the meet, you tap “Need more time”, PickAPet cancels, or the pet is no longer available. Read every refund and cancellation rule.
Do you offer payment plans?
No. It's one payment, with no interest and no pay later.
The adoption contract
Can I return a pet?
There are no returns after the handoff. If things change later, contact us and we'll help you list them on PickAPet.
Do cats have to live indoors?
Yes. Cats are adopted as indoor pets. Indoor cats live longer, safer lives.
Can I declaw my cat?
No. Declawing removes the last bone of each toe, and we don't adopt to homes that plan to do it.
Who has the pet before adoption?
The owner does. PickAPet never takes in, houses or examines the pets. Each one stays home until it goes home with you.
Rehoming your pet
What does it cost to list?
Nothing during our launch. You never receive money for your pet, and no money changes hands between you and the adopter.
Who picks the adopter?
You do, from the applicants we've screened.
What do I need?
Your pet's vet records and a quick ID check. The Owner Agreement has the details.
